When forwarding my application for to obtain Vacation leave I stated for the information of His Excellency that I proposed to retire from the service at the Expiration of any leave which might be granted me.

I have had over 21 years service under The Hongkong Government and on retiring before I have qualified for a pension and it is my intention on my arrival at home to apply to the Secretary of State for some consideration of my case with a view to his granting me after an extension of leave on half pay and an honorarium. And I have to request that His Excellency the Governor may be pleased to forward a copy of this letter to "The Colonial Office together with such recommendation as he may be pleased to make on my behalf.

I entered the service in Oct 1874 having been telegraphed for from home by His Excellency Sir Arthur Kennedy and my first appointment was as Clerk in the Colonial Secretary's Office. Since when I have gradually
